The Kennecott Theatre Presents:
ROCK DOCS
Five FREE movies in Pioneer Park
starting July 30th
Please join the SLC Film Center, the Downtown Alliance and Salt Lake City Corp. for 5 rocking weeks of "rock-umentaries" at the Rio Tinto Kennecott Theatre. Since the SLC Arts Council Twilight Concerts Series will be held in Pioneer Park this summer, what a better way to keep rockin' than to show rock-themed documentaries.
Each Friday a new film will be shown free of charge on a large inflatable screen. Movies start around 9pm, but come early as we are adding musical performances starting at 8pm. Come get a great spot for music and the movie!
Come even earlier in the evening and you can checkout all the new amenities at Pioneer Park since it's recent "facelift" - the new walking trail, off-leash dog area, updated bocce ball court and more!

| JUL 30 | THE WHITE STRIPES UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS |
| Director Emmott Malloy * 93 min. | |
| In 2007 the legendary American duo White Stripes toured Canada. Besides playing the usual venues they challenged themselves and played in buses, cafés and for Indian tribal elders. Music video director Emmett Malloy followed the band and managed to capture both the special tour, extraordinary concert versions of the band's minimalist, raw, blues-inspired rock songs and the special relationship between the extroverted Jack White and the introspective Meg White - a formerly married couple who for a long time claimed to be siblings. | |
| AUG 6 | SOUL POWER |
| Director Jeffery Levy-Hinte * 93 min. | |
| In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. Featuring performances from James Brown, Bill Withers, and B.B. King amongst others. | |
| AUG 13 | STRANGE POWERS: STEPHIN MERRITT AND THE MAGNETIC FIELDS |
| Directors Kerthy Fix and Gail O'Hara * 89 min. | |
| Stephin Merritt is known as "the Cole Porter of his generation" for his memorable melodies, lovelorn lyrics and wry musical stylings. Shot over a period of 10 years, this film explores his friendship recording and songwriting process, the film traces a 20-year career that has yielded one of the most engaging bodies of work in the contemporary American songbook. | |
| AUG 20 | HEAVY METAL IN BAGHDAD |
| Directors Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi * 84min. | |
| In the late summer of 2006, in the middle of the insurgency, filmmakers Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi traveled to Baghdad to meet and interview the only heavy metal band in Iraq, Acrassicauda. "Heavy Metal in Baghdad" is the story of the band and its members, young Iraqis whose lives have been distorted and displaced by years of continual warfare in their homeland. The filmmakers have collected glimpses into the struggles of Acrassicauda as they try to stay together and stay alive. Their struggle is the untold story of the hopes and dreams of an entire generation of young Iraqis. | |
